Shanti Yoga Centre has been a twinkle in Cathy Cozen's eye since the year 2000. After 24 years of studying and teaching in various yoga environments, she was ready to take the leap - to bring into reality her dream of opening a welcoming neighbourhood yoga centre to serve the community where she grew up.
Since opening in October 2005, Shanti Yoga has been a neighbourly meeting place for yoga, relaxation and self-development. With an ongoing vision of openness in mind, Cathy designs her classes and workshops to respond to the needs and interests of the centre's students, allowing room for students to ask questions and have fun. In fact, the way the centre has developed is a direct result of feedback from students. In this way, students of all levels can find a place here and learn to live each moment more fully.
If you're curious about yoga, Cathy would be happy to welcome you to her centre - a place where people will know your name and teachers will follow your progress with interest and integrity.
Come and learn about the doors yoga can open in your life.
The owner and founder of Shanti Yoga Centre, Cathy has been practicing yoga since 1982. For her, yoga was love at first class. She was fortunate to be introduced to yoga in its many forms by Mollie Lawson a wonderful teacher with whom she has worked extensively. In 1988 Cathy was offered the opportunity to create and animate a recreation program at an orthopedic rehabilitation hospital, which she took on eagerly, creating a day-to-day program of experential group activities that emphasized creativity, connection and compassion. The adventure came to an end after ten years of coordinating the program, when Cathy was formally introduced to Vipassana Meditation at a ten-day retreat just outside of Montreal. This experience of dedicating herself to living in the present moment showed her a clear path back to yoga. With this new focus in mind Cathy sought to further hone her skills in teaching yoga, spending a full year studying and practicing Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga at Ashtanga Yoga Studio in Montreal. This education enhanced her personal practice of Iyengar-influenced hatha yoga, and deepened her experience of teaching. Further studies with John Friend (and his teachers) in Anusara style hatha yoga have greatly influenced her personal and teaching practice. At a Vipassana retreat, it became clear to Cathy that it was time for her to create a centre in Montreal dedicated to awareness, strength and relaxation. Grateful to the practice of yoga for all that it offers, Cathy aims to study, practice and teach with love, appreciation and awareness
